SUMMARY:Work Day April 17 -- Cork Wood and Brush Removal
DESCRIPTION:Dear MacKenzie Friends and Volunteers\,\n\n\n\n\n\nResending this work day request from this past February when we had to cancel due to weather. \n\nIf you have been around the property this past Fall you would’ve seen a lot of trees and brush cleared by MacKenzie Staff\, area DNR support and forestry contract workers (check out the bison road fence line).  The Friends and volunteers supported contracted invasive cork tree removal earlier last year and we want to have a work day to keep the clean-up efforts moving – plus we have a few more in-kind work hours needed to fulfill our contribution goal with the Center’s forestry grant .\n\n\nWe have schedule Wednesday April 17th and a weather alternate Thursday April 18th – meet at the finishing house\, 9:00am. We will be loading out brush and blocked logs\, mostly for the burn pile and will likely need two chain saw operators to cut brush and size logs for handling. If we get enough volunteers Steven will try to get a second dump trailer to improve the work flow. Lunch will be around 12:30. The plan is to buck up both hard and soft wood and load most of it to the splitting area and leave some near the sap cooker in the wood storage bays. We now have an open storage bay and plan on storing a good supply of softwood for the fires at the interpretation stations. We are also planning a project to add on another storage bay to house the kindling box and soft wood (once the ground thaws); more on that later.\n\nThere will be work days on three consecutive Fridays — Feb. 23\, March 2nd & 9th — from 9:00 am to noon\, meeting at the finishing house. For each work day we will look for 2-3 qualified chainsaw operators and 4 – 5 others for loading and driving the dump trailer. We can adjust the schedule for work days that are reasonably comfortable\, say with mid-day temps predicted in at least the low 30’s. DESCRIPTION:Friends and Volunteers\,\nCork trees are classified “Prohibited” by the DNR.  Prohibited – If introduced into the state\, are likely to survive and spread\, potentially causing significant environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. Unfortunately they are already well established on the MacKenzie property. \n \nIn support for cork trees removal\, the MacKenzie Center has been awarded a portion of a 2 year grant with the bulk of funds ear-marked for large tree removal by contractors. The Center’s removal plan with staff members is well underway.\n \nWe are asking for volunteer help – scheduling two work days; Tuesday 11/28 and Friday 12/1\, meeting at the Finishing House at 9:00AM. DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for next Wednesday October 25th  when we will be cutting and hauling buckthorn from the sugar bush area. This area is in bad shape and maple trees are  becoming difficult for the kids to access. We can start on the East side of the Badger Den and cover what we can before lunch. DESCRIPTION:MacKenzie Friends and Volunteers\, \n\nWe are going to continue with setting up the fire wood supplies for 2017-18 with another morning of bucking and hauling oak\, and also pine wood to supply the Lodge.\n\nThe plan is mixed depending on the number of volunteers. For sure we will need chain saw operators to buck downed pine and haul to the splitting area. We also want to buck some of the oak laying around to clean up in the splitting area; finish filling the Maple wood storage shelter and stack the remainder of the oak we split last Thursday onto pallets (see Photo). Wood splitting will be scheduled later.\n\nJoin the group for the morning on Wednesday June 14th at 8:30am by the Finishing House. \n\nPlease respond directly to Steven Kaylor  Steven.Kaylor@wisconsin.gov or call him at (608) 635-8102 if you can help on Wednesday and if you plan on bring your chain saw. DESCRIPTION:The new bunks for the dorms are arriving and we need help to set them up.  The bunk beds\, complete with mattresses will be delivered next Thursday morning\, April 13th.  Be at the lodge at 9:00AM if you can help unload\, unpack\, and assemble the beds. Depending on the turnout\, we should be completed by early afternoon. We could use some extra rubber mallets and metal cutting snips for the shipping bands. SUMMARY:Maple Program Clean-up & Volunteer Appreciation Brunch
DESCRIPTION:For all maple program volunteers — come help get everything we used for the maple program taken down\, cleaned up and put away for the season.  Then starting about 11 am the MacKenzie Center staff will be serving a pancake brunch for all volunteers.  This is also the time when volunteers who have put in at least 15 hrs. (not counting training time) will receive their “MacKenzie Gold” maple syrup!
