SUMMARY:Learn to be a Wildlife Area Docent/Volunteer Naturalist
DESCRIPTION:Dear MacKenzie Center Friends and Volunteers\, \nWe have a great opportunity for anyone wanting to get more involved at the MacKenzie Center! \nThe MacKenzie Center Wildlife Team is seeking docents/volunteer naturalists for the summer season.  We would like to offer hands-on activities to visitors on Saturday afternoons at the MacKenzie Center. We hope to provide enhanced learning opportunities about the animals that are part of Wisconsin’s ecological community.  Docents will be stationed in the wildlife area with artifacts such as pelts and skulls to engage and educate guests. \nThough we are open to your input in shaping the program\, no experience is necessary as all docents/volunteer naturalists will need to participate in our training and orientation program.  What we do require is willingness to initiate interaction with children\, teens and adults\, the ability to work outside in summer weather\, and availability approximately once per month from 12-2pm on Saturdays in June\, July\, August\, and perhaps September. \nOrientation will be held Saturday\, June 2nd from 10am-1pm. Please meet in the Badger Den! \nIf you have any questions or are interested in volunteering please email Steve Ruscko\, Wildlife Technician\, at Steven.Ruscko@wisconsin.gov.  Steve\, one of the recent additions to the wildlife team\, is formerly the assistant curator at the Racine Zoo and will be coordinating this program.  He (and the rest of the team) is excited for the engagement that it can provide our guests – but only with your help!

SUMMARY:Maple Festival
DESCRIPTION:This family friendly event allows the public to learn about the science and history of maple sugaring.  There’s a chance to see how trees are tapped and to learn how the Ho-Chunk peoples as well as early European settlers used the sap to make maple sugar or syrup.  Wagon rides\, popcorn\, and other refreshments are available.  The event is free\, although donations are appreciated.  Our gift shop will be open and there’s a drawing for a beautiful quilt (all proceeds support the MacKenzie Center facility and programs) at noon.  There is also a pancake breakfast at the lodge from 8 am until noon.  Admission is charged for the breakfast — Adults $8.00\, children 3-11 $5.00.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of MacKenzie.

SUMMARY:Wood Clearing Work Day
DESCRIPTION:MacKenzie Friends and Volunteers\, \n\nSteven has asked for help clearing a bunch of downed hazard trees around the Maple area and along the trails (all before Maple Fest). The plan is to buck up both hard and soft wood and load most of it to the splitting area and leave some near the sap cooker in the wood storage bays. We now have an open storage bay and plan on storing a good supply of softwood for the fires at the interpretation stations. We are also planning a project to add on another storage bay to house the kindling box and soft wood (once the ground thaws); more on that later.\n\nThere will be work days on three consecutive Fridays — Feb. 23\, March 2nd & 9th — from 9:00 am to noon\, meeting at the finishing house. For each work day we will look for 2-3 qualified chainsaw operators and 4 – 5 others for loading and driving the dump trailer. We can adjust the schedule for work days that are reasonably comfortable\, say with mid-day temps predicted in at least the low 30’s. Lunch can be by group consensus.\n\nWith this in mind\, please respond to Don Lucke (heartshare@centurytel.com or 920-992-3999 letting him know what days you are interested in helping and he will have your name to confirm (or contact you) by at least the day before.\n \nThanks for all you at MacKenzie.

SUMMARY:Maple Program Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! It’s early January… and here at the MacKenzie Center we’re already thinking about spring and maple sugaring season! \nEach year we welcome over 1\,200 participants to the Maple Program. We owe that success to dedicated volunteers who contribute thousands of hours to teach and bring this program to life each spring! \nHave you ever wanted to learn how to collect and cook sap and finish it into syrup? This year is your chance! The Maple Program is a great volunteer opportunity to be a part of! \nThe MacKenzie Center needs volunteers in numerous positions; maple guide\, interpreter\, syrup maker and finisher. No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided. \nThe Maple Program dates for 2018 are Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays the duration of the month of March. Volunteers are needed each day for morning and afternoon shifts. \nPlease email Christopher.Tall@wisconsin.gov or call (608) 635-8112 to confirm your participation this year! This helps us greatly with the planning process and gives us an idea of how many groups we can accommodate. \nIf you know of anyone who might be interested in volunteering to be a maple guide\, interpreter\, syrup maker or finisher\, please feel free to forward them this information. \nPlease “Save the Date” on your calendar for our Maple Program Training Day. \nMaple Program Training Day \nThursday\, February 15th\, 2018  \n9:00am-3:00pm \nMacKenzie LODGE building \nALL maple education volunteers new and seasoned are invited! \nAn overview\, goals and objectives\, specific training for returning & new volunteers for the maple program will be covered this day.

SUMMARY:Invasive Cork Tree Work Day\, Dec. 1
DESCRIPTION:Friends and Volunteers\,\nCork trees are classified “Prohibited” by the DNR.  Prohibited – If introduced into the state\, are likely to survive and spread\, potentially causing significant environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. Unfortunately they are already well established on the MacKenzie property. \n \nIn support for cork trees removal\, the MacKenzie Center has been awarded a portion of a 2 year grant with the bulk of funds ear-marked for large tree removal by contractors. The Center’s removal plan with staff members is well underway.\n \nWe are asking for volunteer help – scheduling two work days; Tuesday 11/28 and Friday 12/1\, meeting at the Finishing House at 9:00AM. We will be working in the woods NE of the Log Museum\, pulling out downed cork tree limbs and bucked logs for the burn pile (possibly for splitting\, tbd); lopper cutting saplings\, and time permitting\, cutting and bagging berries from the downed female tree limbs. \n \nThis project will extend well into next summer and perhaps well beyond.\n \nPlease respond to Don Lucke (heartshare@centurytel.net)l if you plan on helping\, and provide your contact information in case any changes are made. Be sure to dress for the weather.\nThank you for all your support.\n\nHere is a link to the DNR site with invasive cork tree information.\n\n\nhttp://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/AmurCorkTree.html
