DESCRIPTION:Friends and Volunteers\, \nThese past three weeks we have moved a lot of wood to the splitting area that needs blocking in preparation for splitting this Spring. \n\nA group will start bucking it up this Friday\, March 16th. Help is needed to separate and handle the blocked wood (and maybe a third chain saw). We now have an open storage bay and plan on storing a good supply of softwood for the fires at the interpretation stations. We are also planning a project to add on another storage bay to house the kindling box and soft wood (once the ground thaws); more on that later.\n\nThere will be work days on three consecutive Fridays — Feb. 23\, March 2nd & 9th — from 9:00 am to noon\, meeting at the finishing house. For each work day we will look for 2-3 qualified chainsaw operators and 4 – 5 others for loading and driving the dump trailer. We can adjust the schedule for work days that are reasonably comfortable\, say with mid-day temps predicted in at least the low 30’s. Lunch can be by group consensus.\n\nWith this in mind\, please respond to Don Lucke (heartshare@centurytel.com or 920-992-3999 letting him know what days you are interested in helping and he will have your name to confirm (or contact you) by at least the day before.\n \nThanks for all you at MacKenzie.

SUMMARY:DNR Regional Partnership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ben Bergey\, Director\, Bureau of Parks and Recreation Management\, Wisconsin DNR\, issued an invitation to Friends and Partner Group members.  It said (in part) “In 2018 the Wisconsin State Park System is launching several new efforts to enhance the operations and aesthetics at state park system properties across the state as well as expanding recreation expertise and service opportunities to all DNR properties.  We invite park system friends and partner groups to join us and learn more about the changes and opportunities that come with the 2017-2019 state budget\, alignment initiatives\, and other park program updates.  Learn how these efforts will provide exciting opportunities to increase the impact of our partnership efforts.  Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet the Bureau of Parks and Recreation Management leadership team\, key staff members from the Public Relations and Partnership team\, and network with other groups in the same region.” \nThere are seven meetings being held during the months of February and March throughout the state.  One of them is scheduled at the MacKenzie Lodge\, from 4:30 – 6:30 pm on Wednesday\, February 21.  Groups were able to register up to 15 attendees which the Friends of MacKenzie has done.

DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! It’s early January… and here at the MacKenzie Center we’re already thinking about spring and maple sugaring season! \nEach year we welcome over 1\,200 participants to the Maple Program. We owe that success to dedicated volunteers who contribute thousands of hours to teach and bring this program to life each spring! \nHave you ever wanted to learn how to collect and cook sap and finish it into syrup? This year is your chance! The Maple Program is a great volunteer opportunity to be a part of! \nThe MacKenzie Center needs volunteers in numerous positions; maple guide\, interpreter\, syrup maker and finisher. No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided. \nThe Maple Program dates for 2018 are Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays the duration of the month of March. SUMMARY:Invasive Cork Tree Work Day\, Dec. 1
DESCRIPTION:Friends and Volunteers\,\nCork trees are classified “Prohibited” by the DNR.  Prohibited – If introduced into the state\, are likely to survive and spread\, potentially causing significant environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. Unfortunately they are already well established on the MacKenzie property. \n \nIn support for cork trees removal\, the MacKenzie Center has been awarded a portion of a 2 year grant with the bulk of funds ear-marked for large tree removal by contractors. The Center’s removal plan with staff members is well underway.\n \nWe are asking for volunteer help – scheduling two work days; Tuesday 11/28 and Friday 12/1\, meeting at the Finishing House at 9:00AM. We will be working in the woods NE of the Log Museum\, pulling out downed cork tree limbs and bucked logs for the burn pile (possibly for splitting\, tbd); lopper cutting saplings\, and time permitting\, cutting and bagging berries from the downed female tree limbs. \n \nThis project will extend well into next summer and perhaps well beyond.\n \nPlease respond to Don Lucke (heartshare@centurytel.net)l if you plan on helping\, and provide your contact information in case any changes are made. Be sure to dress for the weather.\nThank you for all your support.\n\nHere is a link to the DNR site with invasive cork tree information.\n\n\nhttp://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/AmurCorkTree.html

DESCRIPTION:Come on out to the MacKenzie Center for an evening hike through the trails. The illuminated trail will begin at the MacKenzie Center lodge and will include a bonfire with s’mores. SUMMARY:Work Day in the Sugar bush Area Oct. 25
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for next Wednesday October 25th  when we will be cutting and hauling buckthorn from the sugar bush area. This area is in bad shape and maple trees are  becoming difficult for the kids to access. We can start on the East side of the Badger Den and cover what we can before lunch. SUMMARY:Friends of MacKenzie Fall Festival
DESCRIPTION:NEW DATE (due to weather concerns)!  SUNDAY\, OCT 8 \nCome enjoy the beauty of fall at the MacKenzie Center.  This family friendly event will give you a chance to participate in some of the many activities available at MacKenzie including archery\, air guns\, compass skills\, wildlife tours\, fire building\, hiking\, and studying the plant and critter life in our pond.  In addition you can learn about (and touch) real furs and skulls\, cut a “wood cookie” using a two-person crosscut saw\, make leaf and wildlife track pressings and try other crafts.  Come in costume (if you like) and participate in some of our seasonal activities — pumpkin painting\, a hay bale maze\, gunny sack races\, face painting\, scarecrow making\, hayrides\, and more!  Musical entertainment starts at 11 am.  The $15/vehicle admission covers all activities.  Food and gift shop items will be available at an additional cost.  Come for an hour or plan to stay all day\, there’s something for everyone!  All proceeds stay at the MacKenzie Center to support the facility and its programs!
