SUMMARY:Goat fence work day
DESCRIPTION:To all MacKenzie Friends and volunteers\,\n \nGoats have been used by a number of individuals and organizations (including the US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Forest Service) as a way to control invasive plant species.  The wildlife management team at MacKenzie will be trying this out soon.  To get ready\, a fence to keep people away from the area involved has been installed.  Now the people who own and handle the goats are scheduled to be at the MacKenzie Center with the electric fence and the goats on Monday May 23rd – we’ll meet at the lodge at 9:30 am to pull garlic mustard; then finish the fencing project and watch the goats start on the buckthorn.  Lunch will be provided.\n \nThe electric fence manufacturer’s web site describes “pushing” the fence posts into the ground\, so bring a heavy hammer if you have one. The fence posts appear to be a metal rod in pipe sheath that is all attached and woven into the rectangular mesh fence over six ft.\n\nIf you’re interested\, here is the site:   https://www.premier1supplies.com/goats/fencing.php\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Looking ahead to the upcoming Pope & Young Rendezvous\, selected prairie areas will need to be  mowed to provide for additional parking space. Steven has asked for help to walk the areas prior to mowing to locate and mark any obstacles the mower operator will need to avoid. We would like to have 10 to 15 volunteers. The plan is to inspect by walking in-line and thoroughly covering the areas. We may need to get creative with marking and a possible plan for later removal of obstacles. – it should take less than two hours. \n\nAfter that warm up we can finish the morning helping with one of Kyle’s wildlife projects – installing snow fence that will contain buckthorn eating goats. Goats to arrive in May. Bring your metal fence post driver as an extra if you care to.\n\nLets start a little earlier at 8:30 AM\, Wed. April 20th\, meet at the Finishing House. We have lunch when we are finished at about noon. Dress appropriately.

SUMMARY:Help Poynette Forester plant trees
DESCRIPTION:Message from Poynette Forester\, Bruce Henderson: \nI know it’s short notice\, but I have a number of small trees to be hand planted on a couple of state properties this spring.  I am wondering if there is anyone interested in volunteering to plant trees either next Saturday morning (9:30 am on April 16th) or the following Sunday afternoon (12:30 pm on April 17th).  We have the seedlings here\, and cannot store them indefinitely. \nI have attached a map to the site.  It is at the Grassy Lake Wildlife Area.  This property is just north/ northwest of the small town of Otsego.  Otsego is located on State Hwy 16 on the east side of the county.  We’ll meet in a DNR parking lot at the end of a gravel access road.  The fire number right across the road is N4011 Erdman Road.  Most of the seedlings I have will be planted at this site.  There are a few others for one other site west of Poynette.  Depending on how many people are interested and on which days\, I made divide the group.  Or\, perhaps we’ll finish this project on Saturday and go to the other site on Sunday. \nAs far as what to bring or wear\, I recommend the following: \n\nSunscreen and eye protection\nWork gloves\, preferably with some dexterity\nDurable clothes with long sleeves\nBug spray for ticks\, if desired\nOld 5-gallon bucket(s)\, if possible (I recommend the latter as we don’t have too many planting bags.  We’ll use these to carry the trees around the site.)\nLong handled round point shovel\, if possible (I plan to bring all of the tree planting bars we have.  I still don’t have a tally on how many folks we’ll have\, though.  We’ll only need or use the shovels if we have a lot of people.)\n\nIf people are interested in helping\, please reply to me for planning purposes.  Let me know which day\, or both\, that you’re willing to help with.  Any help would be appreciated!  I find it rewarding work\, and think that others might\, too!

SUMMARY:Maple Fest
DESCRIPTION:The Maple Syrup Festival\, a fun-filled\, educational event for families is scheduled for Saturday\, April 2 from 8 am – 2 pm at the MacKenzie Center near Poynette. Maple Syrup Festival is hosted by the Friends of MacKenzie and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. \nThe event features: free guided tours of the sugarbush\, demonstrations of how to tap a maple tree for sap and how to make syrup\, interpretative talks about how Native Americans and pioneers made maple sugar and syrup as well as current methods used in our own MacKenzie sugarbush. This year representatives from the Ho-Chunk Nation will join us to share their traditions. \n“This is a great way to celebrate the beginning of spring\,” said Ruth Ann Lee\, educator at the MacKenzie Center. “It is a wonderful event to learn about the Sugar Maple tree and the unique process of making maple syrup in our Wisconsin climate. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to watch home-made ice cream being churned with an antique engine; listen to live\, old-time\, country music; and take a horse-drawn wagon ride. In addition\, the wildlife area\, which includes animals native to Wisconsin\, and the historic exhibits on property will be open. \nA pancake breakfast\, sponsored by Friends of MacKenzie will be served from 8 am until noon at the Main Lodge. The cost is $7 for those 12 years old and older\, and $5 for people aged 3 – 11. Refreshments\, maple products\, and souvenirs will be sold by the Friends of MacKenzie. The Friends will also draw the winners for their raffle at 12 noon. \nThe MacKenzie Center is located two miles east of Poynette on County Road CS/Q.
